Windsor Davies: It Ain't Half Hot Mum actor dies

Actor and star of It Ain't Half Hot Mum, Windsor Davies, has died.

Windsor Davies, 88, who played the gruff Battery Sergeant Major "Shut Up" Williams in the 1970s TV series, died two days ago, his family said.

The show ran from 1974-1981 for 56 episodes.

Windsor’s daughter Jane Davies told the BBC that he and her mother, who died in September, left a family "who will all remember them with love, laughter and gratitude".

The couple were married for 62 years, had five children and had retired to France. 

Windsor Davies and It Ain't Half Hot Mum acting co-star Don Estelle had a number one hit together in 1975 when they recorded a version of Whispering Grass in character. It sold more than one million copies.

Windsor Davies also played the part of Oliver Smallbridge, with Donald Sinden, as two antique dealers in the ITV show Never The Twain.
