I sold this really rather fabulous pair of 1970s YSL bottle green t-bar sandals (see picture below) this week here on Lovely's Vintage Emporium and it got me thinking about vintage shoes and the sheer quality of many of them.

Today I was in a little shoe repair shop in a seaside town not far from where we are having a vintage pair of my own (1970s Gucci loafers) re-soled when I ended up chatting to the very knowledgeable owner of the shop all about the quality of shoes in the past compared to now. He was very taken with my loafers and said: "It is much easier to repair vintage shoes than new ones as the quality is so good that you have more to work with." When I asked him to expand on this he went on to tell me about a pair of vintage Chanel shoes someone had given him to repair that needed a new buckle and how the quality of the leather was so high that he was able to easily take off the old fastening and elastic and replace them without anyone else really knowing.

He then pulled out a pair of recent Christian Louboutin boots that a client had given him that morning to stretch (a Christmas present that was 1/2 a size too small for her) and although he admired them he felt the leather might be challenging to stretch too much as it would ruin the look of the boots. He said that he never has the same worries when he receives boots that are 30+ years old...no surprise there then.

See below for some fabulous vintage footwear and click on the name of each to take you direct to the page to buy them.
