John Bates designed this dress for his Jean Varon label. This is a beautiful blue, purple and black vintage floral and leaf print dress with with a round neck and three covered buttons at the front. The sleeves are a fabulous touch as they are open but with four buttons down each one so you can flash a little of your arm. The dress has two layers - the outer print and the silk lining. There are yards and yards of fabric so it is great for twirling in! (see pictures) Label says size 16 (this is a vintage dress so best to go down one or two sizes for current shapes). The condition of this dress is excellent and it has been dry cleaned ready to wear. A classic Jean Varon dress that is a collector's item.
John Bates was a fashion designer who was part of the boutique scene that blossomed in London in the 1960s. From 1959 he began designing under the name Jean Varon. Bates' work as Jean Varon in the 1960s was particularly modernistic and in 1965 Bates designed memorable outfits for Diana Rigg to wear for her role as Emma Peel in The Avengers.
